Do you have access to another computer you could try on (it'd have to be the same basic type, like Windows/Mac, but doesn't have to be exactly the same version of Windows or OS X) to get the files, and then copy them locally? It sounds to me like what's happening is that the downloader is getting downloaded as the wrong type of file -- it should be identified as an executable application, and it sounds like it's coming in as a data file so the computer wants to know what application to run it with. I'm not sure why that would be happening, but it sounds like a bug.
